Question 1

What documents do you need to buy a used car in Italy?

Accepted Answer

The Documento Unico, or the older carta di circolazione with the certificato di proprietà, and the authenticated sale deed. The buyer shows an identity document and their codice fiscale, and needs RC auto insurance before driving.

Question 2

How often is a car inspected in Italy?

Accepted Answer

The first revisione is due four years after first registration, then every two years. On a used car, check the date of the last passed revisione on the Documento Unico.

Question 3

What happens to the number plates when you buy a used car in Italy?

Accepted Answer

Italian plates stay with the car, so the seller does not keep them and the buyer needs no new ones. Only the owner on the Documento Unico changes.

Question 4

Who pays IPT when you sell a car to a dealer in Italy?

Accepted Answer

No one: a private sale to a dealer who trades in used cars, the minivoltura, pays no IPT. The tax is paid later by whoever buys the car from the dealer.

Question 5

Accepted Answer
