Question 1

Is there a manual Alfa Romeo Tonale?

Accepted Answer

No, every Tonale has an automatic gearbox, whatever the engine or year. The type differs: dual-clutch on the hybrid and diesel, torque converter on the plug-in hybrid.

Question 2

What should I check on a used Alfa Romeo Tonale's dual-clutch gearbox?

Accepted Answer

Try it at low speed and in stop-start traffic: jerks when pulling away or hesitation between the first gears call for a garage check. Ask whether the dealer has applied any software updates.

Question 3

Which automatic Alfa Romeo Tonale suits town driving best?

Accepted Answer

The hybrid, whose electric motor helps when pulling away and lets the car creep and park without the engine. The plug-in hybrid goes further if you can charge it, covering town trips on electricity alone.

Question 4

Is a new automatic Alfa Romeo Tonale worth it?

Accepted Answer

Every new Tonale is automatic too: the 130 hp diesel, the 175 hp hybrid and the 270 hp plug-in hybrid Q4, in Sprint, Ti, Veloce and Luna Rossa trims. A new one has the factory warranty; a used one costs less.
