Question 1

Is the S tronic gearbox in the Audi A1 reliable?

Accepted Answer

It is if it has been looked after, but the seven-speed dry-clutch unit is the most delicate part of an automatic A1. Judder when pulling away, slow engagement of reverse or a gearbox warning light point to the clutch or the mechatronic unit.

Question 2

How should I test an automatic Audi A1 before buying?

Accepted Answer

Drive it from cold, in stop-start traffic and on slow manoeuvres, where a dry-clutch S tronic shows its faults. Ask for invoices of any clutch or mechatronic work and of software updates.

Question 3

Is an automatic Audi A1 good for city driving?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it removes the clutch pedal in traffic and suits the A1's role as a city car. Long creeping in queues wears a dry clutch, so gentle, decisive starts help it last.

Question 4

How much does a new automatic Audi A1 cost?

Accepted Answer

The new A1 comes with S tronic on the 116 hp 30 TFSI, the 150 hp 35 TFSI and, on the Sportback, the 207 hp 40 TFSI, as Sportback or allstreet, in Business, Identity and S line Edition trims. Each version is at Audi's list price beside the used cars.
