Question 1

Is a manual Audi A3 better than an S tronic?

Accepted Answer

It is simpler and cheaper to keep, with no dual-clutch or mechatronic unit to fail, and suits drivers who cover few kilometres. The S tronic is more relaxed in city traffic, where a manual clutch also wears faster.

Question 2

What should I check on a used manual Audi A3?

Accepted Answer

Feel for a slipping clutch or a heavy pedal, and listen at idle for rattle from the dual-mass flywheel, common on the TDIs. Replacing both is a sizeable job, so allow for it in the price.

Question 3

Which petrol engine is best on a manual Audi A3?

Accepted Answer

The 1.5 TFSI, from 2017 on the third generation and on the fourth, pairs good pull with low consumption and has a timing belt. The 1.4 TFSI fitted up to 2012 used a chain whose tensioner could fail, so check its service record.

Question 4

Can you still buy a new Audi A3 with a manual gearbox?

Accepted Answer

Yes: the new A3 comes with a manual gearbox with the 116 hp TFSI petrol and the 116 hp TDI diesel, as a Sportback or Sedan. Trims run from Business and Business Advanced to Design and S line; the stronger versions are S tronic only.
