Question 1

Is the multitronic gearbox on a used Audi A5 reliable?

Accepted Answer

It is the most delicate of the A5's automatics, fitted only to front-wheel-drive cars of the first generation. Ask for proof that its fluid was changed and test pulling away gently and on a slope: judder points to worn clutch plates.

Question 2

Which used Audi A5 models have the tiptronic gearbox?

Accepted Answer

On the second generation, the most powerful V6s, such as the 3.0 TDI with 286 hp and the S5, use the eight-speed tiptronic torque converter. It copes well with high torque and high mileage.

Question 3

What should I check on an Audi A5 with S tronic?

Accepted Answer

That its oil and filter were changed at the intervals in the service book. On the test drive, jerks when manoeuvring from cold or hesitation when pulling away point to the clutches or the mechatronic unit.

Question 4

Is the new Audi A5 sold only as an automatic?

Accepted Answer

Yes, every new A5 and A5 Avant has the seven-speed S tronic, with 150 or 204 hp TFSI petrol engines, a 204 hp TDI or e-hybrid plug-ins of 299 and 367 hp, front-wheel drive or quattro. It now replaces the A4, as a fastback and an estate.
