Question 1

Which BMW 1 Series diesel engine should I be careful with?

Accepted Answer

The N47 diesel in 1 Series built from about 2007 to 2015 is known for timing chain wear, with the chain at the back of the engine. A rattle at idle is a warning sign; the B47 that replaced it is more robust.

Question 2

Is the BMW 1 Series rear-wheel drive?

Accepted Answer

Up to 2019, yes: the E87 and F20 drive the rear wheels, which gives them a balanced feel. The F40 and the current car are front-wheel drive, with xDrive four-wheel drive on the M135i and other top versions.

Question 3

What is the difference between the BMW M135i and M140i?

Accepted Answer

The rear-drive F20 M135i and the later M140i have a 3.0 six-cylinder petrol; the F40 M135i xDrive uses a 2.0 four-cylinder with four-wheel drive. All have more than 185 kW, so they pay the superbollo.

Question 4

Which engines does the new BMW 1 Series have?

Accepted Answer

The new 1 Series comes with the 116, 120, 123 xDrive and M135 xDrive petrol engines and the 118d and 120d diesels, from 122 to 300 hp, all with an automatic gearbox. Each version is shown at BMW's list price beside the used cars.
