How do I tell if a BMW 1 Series diesel has the N47 engine?

Most 116d, 118d and 120d built from 2007 to about 2015 have it, and its timing chain sits at the gearbox end, so replacing it is costly. A rattle from the back of the engine, loudest at idle, calls for a check before buying.

Is the BMW 116d a three-cylinder?

From the 2015 facelift of the F20, the 116d has a 1.5 three-cylinder, the B37; earlier ones use a 2.0 four-cylinder. It is the most frugal 1 Series, but the 118d's four-cylinder is smoother.

Can a used BMW 1 Series diesel enter low-emission zones?

It depends on its Euro class and on each city's rules, such as Milan's Area B, which tightens on diesels in stages. The Euro class is in field V.9 of the Documento Unico.
