Question 1

Which BMW 1 Series petrol engine is the most reliable?

Accepted Answer

The 1.5 three-cylinder fitted to the 116i and 118i since 2015 has a good record and is cheap to run. The earlier 1.6 turbo four, from 2011 to 2015, is the one to check for timing-chain rattle on a cold start.

Question 2

Does the BMW M135i pay the superbollo?

Accepted Answer

Yes: every M135i and M140i has more than 185 kW, so €20 for each kW above that threshold is added to the bollo every year, falling as the car ages. Count it in the running costs before buying.

Question 3

Is the BMW 1 Series rear-wheel drive?

Accepted Answer

The first two generations, up to 2019, are rear-wheel drive, rare in a compact hatchback. Since the third generation, from 2019, the 1 Series is front-wheel drive, with xDrive four-wheel drive on the most powerful versions.

Question 4

Accepted Answer

The new 1 Series petrol is sold as the 116 with 122 hp, the 120 with 170 hp, the 123 xDrive with 218 hp and the M135 xDrive with 300 hp, all automatic. Each is at BMW's list price beside the used cars.
