Question 1

Which BMW 3 Series generation is the best to buy used?

Accepted Answer

An F30 from its later years pairs the B47 diesel and B48 petrol engines with the eight-speed automatic and is a sound buy. The G20, from 2019, adds newer driver aids and a more modern interior, at a higher price.

Question 2

What problems does the BMW 320d have?

Accepted Answer

On E90s and F30s built up to about 2015, the N47 engine's timing chain, at the back of the engine, can stretch and is costly to replace. The later B47 is sounder, though town use can clog its particulate filter and EGR valve.

Question 3

Is a used BMW 330e plug-in hybrid worth it?

Accepted Answer

It is for drivers who charge often: the 330e pairs a 2.0 petrol engine with an electric motor in the gearbox for short trips on electricity. Ask about the battery's health, as electric range falls with age.

Question 4

Which versions does the new BMW 3 Series come in?

Accepted Answer

The new 3 Series is sold as a saloon and as the Touring, with petrol, diesel and 330e plug-in hybrid engines up to the M340i, M340d and M350 xDrive, all automatic. Each version is at BMW's list price beside the used cars.
