Question 1

Which BMW X1 generation should I buy used?

Accepted Answer

The E84, from 2009 to 2015, is the cheapest and rear-drive based. The F48, from 2015 to 2022, moved to front-wheel drive and has noticeably more room inside, and the U11 from 2022 is the newest.

Question 2

Which BMW X1 engines are the most reliable?

Accepted Answer

On the E84, the 18d and 20d use the N47 diesel, whose timing chain can stretch, so ask whether it has been replaced. The F48's B47 two-litre diesel is more robust, while the 16d uses a smaller three-cylinder.

Question 3

Is there a plug-in hybrid BMW X1?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the F48 xDrive25e arrived in 2020, and the U11 offers the xDrive25e and xDrive30e. They pair a front petrol engine with an electric motor on the rear axle, so check the battery's charge history and the charging cable.

Question 4

How much does a new BMW X1 cost?

Accepted Answer

The new X1 is sold with petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid engines from 136 to 326 hp, sDrive or xDrive, all automatic, plus the M35i xDrive. Every version is at BMW's list price beside the used cars.
