Question 1

Which BMW X3 diesel engine is best?

Accepted Answer

The 20d is enough for most buyers and keeps the bollo moderate, while the six-cylinder 30d is smoother and stronger for towing and long journeys. Prefer a 20d built from 2014, with the B47 engine.

Question 2

What problems does the BMW X3 20d have?

Accepted Answer

On X3s up to 2014, the N47 engine can suffer timing-chain wear, heard as a rattle from the back of the engine. On any diesel X3 used mostly in town, check the particulate filter and EGR valve, and on recent Euro 6 cars the AdBlue system.

Question 3

Can a diesel BMW X3 enter Italian low-emission zones?

Accepted Answer

It depends on its Euro class and the city: Milan's Area B and similar zones in northern cities shut out older diesels step by step. A Euro 6d X3 faces the fewest limits; check the class on the Documento Unico and your city's rules.

Question 4

Does the BMW X3 30d pay the superbollo?

Accepted Answer

The G01 xDrive30d exceeds 185 kW, so it pays the superbollo on the kW above the threshold, reduced after five, ten and fifteen years and gone at twenty. Older F25 30d versions sit near the line, so check field P.2 of the registration document.
