Question 1

Does the BMW N47 diesel have timing chain problems?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the N47 2.0 four-cylinder, fitted from about 2007 to 2015, is known for timing chain wear. The chain sits at the back of the engine, so the repair is costly; a rattle from the rear at start-up is the warning sign.

Question 2

Is the BMW B47 or B57 diesel reliable?

Accepted Answer

Both are considered sound, and the B47 largely solved the N47's chain problem. On cars driven mostly in town, the particulate filter and EGR valve can clog, as on any modern diesel.

Question 3

Can a used BMW diesel enter Milan's Area B?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the Euro class on the Documento Unico: Area B shuts out older diesels on a calendar that tightens over the years. A recent Euro 6 BMW diesel faces fewer limits, but check the city's current rules before buying.

Question 4

How much does a new BMW diesel cost?

Accepted Answer

New diesel BMWs run from the 1 Series and X1 to the 7 Series and X7, all with an automatic gearbox and many with xDrive. Each version is shown at BMW's official list price beside the used diesels.
