What should I check on a manual BMW diesel?

The dual-mass flywheel and the clutch: vibration at idle, a knock when switching off or a clutch that bites high point to wear. On cars driven mostly in town, both wear out sooner.

Which BMW models still have a manual gearbox?

Recent BMWs are almost all automatic, and the manual survives mainly on sporty models such as the M2. Most manual BMWs on sale are therefore 1 Series, 3 Series and X1 of earlier generations.

Is a manual BMW cheaper to run than an automatic?

Servicing is simpler, with no automatic gearbox oil to change, and a clutch costs less than an automatic gearbox repair. Fuel use is close, as BMW's eight-speed automatic is efficient.
