Question 1

Soft top or folding hard top: which is better on a used convertible?

Accepted Answer

A fabric roof is lighter and leaves more boot space, but ages in the sun and needs care. A folding hard top is quieter and more secure, but its mechanism costs more to repair.

Question 2

What should I check on a used convertible's roof?

Accepted Answer

Open and close it several times, listening to the motor or hydraulic pump, and look for damp carpets and blocked drains. Check that the rear window is clear and the fabric not worn at the folds.

Question 3

Is the Fiat 500C a true convertible?

Accepted Answer

Not quite: the 500C keeps its side frames and folds back a large fabric roof, so it stays a four-seater with the hatchback's structure. Roadsters such as the Mazda MX-5 open completely.

Question 4

How much does a new convertible cost in Italy?

Accepted Answer

New convertibles run from the Fiat 500C and Mazda MX-5 to the BMW 4 Series, Mercedes CLE and SL, Porsche 911 and Maserati GranCabrio, with petrol, hybrid and electric versions. Each version's list price sits beside the used ones.
