Question 1

What problems does the Citroën C3 BlueHDi diesel have?

Accepted Answer

The AdBlue system is the known weak point: a fault in the tank, pump or sensor lights a warning that can stop the engine restarting. Driven only in town, the particulate filter also clogs, so ask how the car was used.

Question 2

Is an older Citroën C3 1.4 HDi still worth buying?

Accepted Answer

Only on a tight budget and mostly outside town: these cars are Euro 3 to Euro 5, and anti-smog measures in the Po Valley cities and zones such as Milan's Area B restrict them. Check the Euro class on the Documento Unico.

Question 3

What is the additive tank on an older Citroën C3 HDi?

Accepted Answer

Older HDi engines with a particulate filter use an additive, kept in a separate tank, to help the filter burn off soot. When it runs low a warning lights, and topping it up belongs to the service schedule.

Question 4

Is a diesel Citroën C3 cheaper to run than a petrol one?

Accepted Answer

Only at high mileage: the BlueHDi uses less fuel, but the bollo depends on kW and Euro class, not fuel, and AdBlue and filter upkeep add cost.
