Question 1

Is the Citroën EAT8 automatic gearbox reliable?

Accepted Answer

Generally yes: it is an eight-speed torque-converter automatic built by Aisin. On a test drive, check that it shifts smoothly from cold, and ask whether its fluid has been changed on a high-mileage car.

Question 2

How do I tell a Citroën ETG from a real automatic?

Accepted Answer

The ETG, called EGS or BMP6 on older cars, is a manual gearbox with an automated clutch, and the car nods forward on each upshift. It is cheaper to buy but slower, and its clutch actuator can fail.

Question 3

Which Citroëns have the AL4 automatic, and should I avoid it?

Accepted Answer

The four-speed AL4 was fitted to older C3, C4 and Picasso models until the EAT6 replaced it. It is prone to harsh shifts and limp mode from solenoid faults, so test it thoroughly or prefer a later gearbox.

Question 4

Which new Citroëns are sold with an automatic gearbox?

Accepted Answer

Every Hybrid, with the six-speed e-DCS6 on the C3, C3 Aircross, C4 and C5 Aircross, every electric ë model, the 225 hp C5 Aircross plug-in hybrid, and the Jumpy Combi and Spacetourer with the 180 hp 2.2 diesel.
