Question 1

Is a used diesel car still worth buying in Italy?

Accepted Answer

It is for high-mileage drivers, especially outside towns, where a diesel uses less fuel. On short urban trips the particulate filter struggles to regenerate and traffic restrictions bite harder.

Question 2

Which diesel cars are banned from Milan's Area B?

Accepted Answer

Milan's Area B and Area C exclude diesels of the older Euro classes, on a calendar that widens over the years. Before buying, check the Euro class on the Documento Unico and the city's current rules.

Question 3

What should I check on a used diesel with AdBlue?

Accepted Answer

Recent Euro 6 diesels use AdBlue in their SCR system, so ask whether the tank, pump or sensor has been replaced. A lit AdBlue warning can stop the engine starting until the fault is fixed.

Question 4

Does a diesel car pay more bollo in Italy?

Accepted Answer

The bollo is charged on kW and Euro class, not fuel, so a Euro 6 diesel pays the same as a Euro 6 petrol car of the same power. The rates are set by the owner's region.

Question 5

How much does a new diesel car cost compared with petrol?

Accepted Answer

New diesel versions usually cost more than the petrol versions of the same car, as the engine and SCR system are more complex. Each version's list price can be compared beside the used cars.
