Question 1

Which is better on a Fiat 500L, the 1.3 or the 1.6 Multijet?

Accepted Answer

The 1.3 Multijet suits town and mixed driving and uses very little fuel, but feels stretched with a full load. The 1.6 Multijet pulls a loaded 500L or Living more easily and is the better choice for motorway trips.

Question 2

What goes wrong on a Fiat 500L diesel?

Accepted Answer

On cars used mostly in town, the particulate filter and EGR valve tend to clog. On the 1.6 Multijet, check that the timing belt was changed on schedule; the 1.3 has a chain.

Question 3

Is the Dualogic gearbox on the Fiat 500L 1.3 Multijet reliable?

Accepted Answer

It is an automated manual, not a true automatic, so changes are slow and the clutch and hydraulic actuator wear. Test it in traffic and ask whether either has been replaced.

Question 4

Can a used Fiat 500L diesel enter low-emission zones in Italy?

Accepted Answer

It depends on its Euro class and the city: Milan's Area B and other zones bar older diesels step by step. Check the Euro class on the Documento Unico before buying, especially for an early car.
