Is a manual Fiat Punto better than an automatic?

Usually, yes: the manual is simple and cheap to repair, while the Speedgear CVT of the second generation and the later Dualogic can need costly work. An automatic Punto is worth it only after a careful test drive.

How do you check the gearbox on a used Fiat Punto?

Change through every gear, reverse included, listening for crunching, and feel for a vague or loose lever, which points to worn linkage. A slipping clutch or one that bites very high is the other common repair.

Which manual Fiat Punto is best for motorway driving?

The 1.3 Multijet diesel is the most economical at steady speeds, and the 1.4 T-Jet petrol the quickest. The 1.2 Fire is fine in town but works hard on the motorway.

From €500 to €140,000, half under €4,000 · Typically 2012 with 170,000 km. The manual is the gearbox of almost every Punto. The alternatives were few: a Speedgear CVT on some second-generation 1.2 cars and the Dualogic robotised gearbox later, both costlier to repair, so a manual is usually the safer used buy.
