Which Fiat Tipo engines come with a manual gearbox?

All except the 1.5 Hybrid, the 1.6 E-torQ automatic and the DCT versions of the 1.6 Multijet. The 1.0 turbo petrol, from 2020, and the 1.6 Multijet are the manual Tipos most often found.

What should I check on a used manual Fiat Tipo?

Feel for a heavy or high-biting clutch, and on the 1.6 Multijet listen at idle for rattle from the dual-mass flywheel. Crunching into second or third points to worn synchromesh.

Is a manual Fiat Tipo cheaper to run than an automatic?

Usually yes, as there is no dual-clutch or torque-converter gearbox to service or repair. A manual 1.6 Multijet is the classic choice for drivers covering long distances.
