Question 1

Is the Ford PowerShift gearbox reliable?

Accepted Answer

The one to watch is the six-speed dry-clutch PowerShift fitted to petrol Fiestas and Focuses in the early 2010s: judder when pulling away and clutch wear are its known faults. The wet-clutch version on diesel Focus, Kuga and Mondeo models is sturdier; ask for the gearbox's service history either way.

Question 2

Which automatic gearbox does the Ford Kuga have?

Accepted Answer

The third-generation Kuga, from 2020, pairs its petrol and diesel engines with an eight-speed automatic, while the full and plug-in hybrids use a power-split transmission with no clutch or gears to change. Second-generation diesels used the PowerShift dual-clutch.

Question 3

Do Ford hybrids have an automatic gearbox?

Accepted Answer

The full and plug-in hybrids of the Kuga, Mondeo and S-Max are automatic only. The mild hybrids with the 1.0 EcoBoost Hybrid, in the Puma, Fiesta and Focus, come with a manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch.

Question 4

Which new Fords come with an automatic gearbox?

Accepted Answer

Every electric Ford, from the Puma Gen-E to the Explorer, Capri, Mustang Mach-E and E-Tourneo Courier, has a single-speed drive. Among combustion cars, the Puma 1.0 EcoBoost Hybrid offers a seven-speed Powershift with 125 or 160 hp (ST), the Kuga an eight-speed automatic with the 186 hp 1.5 EcoBoost or the 243 hp plug-in hybrid, and the Mustang V8 a ten-speed automatic.
