Question 1

Is a 4x4 Jeep Renegade or Compass worth it?

Accepted Answer

It is for snowy mountain roads or rough tracks: the 4x4 versions engage the rear axle automatically when grip runs short. In town and on the motorway a front-drive version costs less to buy and to run.

Question 2

Which used Jeep SUV is best for the city?

Accepted Answer

The Avenger is the shortest, at about 4.1 metres, and comes as an electric or a small petrol. The Renegade is barely longer but taller and boxier, with a higher driving position.

Question 3

What should I check on a used diesel Jeep Compass or Renegade?

Accepted Answer

On the 1.6 and 2.0 Multijet, ask about the particulate filter and EGR valve if the car did mostly short trips. On 4x4 automatics, check that the nine-speed gearbox shifts smoothly and that the rear drive engages.

Question 4

Is a new Jeep Compass or Avenger better than a used one?

Accepted Answer

The new Compass is a new generation with mild-hybrid, plug-in and electric versions of up to 375 hp, and the new Avenger also comes as an electric or a 4xe. A used one costs less but has older engines; each new version is listed at Jeep's list price beside the used cars.
