Question 1

Which Land Rover models had a manual gearbox?

Accepted Answer

The classic Defender was manual only, as were most Freelanders, while the Evoque and Discovery Sport offered a six-speed manual on some diesel versions. The Range Rover, Velar, Discovery 5 and the Defender sold since 2020 are automatic only.

Question 2

Is a classic Land Rover Defender a good buy in Italy?

Accepted Answer

It is simple and tough off road, but noisy, short on safety aids and prone to rust in the chassis and bulkhead. The later Puma diesels, from 2007, are the most usable on the road.

Question 3

What should I check on a used Land Rover Freelander 2 manual?

Accepted Answer

Check the Haldex coupling, whose oil and pump need servicing, and the rear differential and transfer unit. On the 2.2 diesels, also check the clutch and dual-mass flywheel.

Question 4

Does an old Land Rover Defender pay the bollo in Italy?

Accepted Answer

Yes, on its kW and Euro class at the rate of the owner's region, and older Euro classes pay more per kW. Over thirty years old and not used professionally, it pays no bollo, only a small circulation tax if driven on the road.
