Question 1

Are used manual cars cheaper than automatics in Italy?

Accepted Answer

Usually, on the same model and year, since the automatic was often an extra-cost option when new. Running taxes are the same: the bollo and IPT look only at kW and Euro class, not at the gearbox.

Question 2

What should you check on a used manual car?

Accepted Answer

Check that the clutch does not slip when you accelerate hard in a high gear, and that every gear goes in without crunching. On a diesel, a rattle at idle or a shudder when pulling away can mean a worn dual-mass flywheel, which is costly to replace.

Question 3

Do manual cars use less fuel than automatics?

Accepted Answer

Older manuals often beat the automatics of their day, but modern dual-clutch and torque-converter gearboxes have closed the gap. On a recent car the difference is small either way.

Question 4

Which new cars are still sold with a manual gearbox in Italy?

Accepted Answer

Many petrol and diesel versions, some with mild-hybrid help, among them the Fiat 500, Dacia Sandero and Duster, Skoda Fabia and Octavia, Volkswagen Polo and Golf, and Mazda 3, CX-30 and MX-5. Full hybrids, plug-ins and electric cars are automatic.
