Question 1

Which Mercedes A-Class generations had a manual gearbox?

Accepted Answer

The second generation, from 2004, the third, from 2012, and the fourth, from 2018, all offered a manual. Since the fourth generation's 2023 update the A-Class has been sold as an automatic only.

Question 2

Is a manual Mercedes A-Class cheaper to run than an automatic?

Accepted Answer

Usually yes: there is no dual-clutch unit whose oil must be changed on schedule, and a worn clutch is a routine repair. On a test drive, check that the clutch bites cleanly and the gearchange is smooth.

Question 3

Which petrol engine does a manual A-Class have?

Accepted Answer

Fourth-generation A 180 and A 200 cars have a 1.3 turbo developed with Renault-Nissan, while third-generation ones have a 1.6 turbo. Both suit mostly urban and mixed driving.

Question 4

Does a manual A-Class pay less bollo than an automatic?

Accepted Answer

No, the bollo depends on kW and Euro class, not the gearbox, at the rate set by the owner's region. A manual and an automatic with the same power and class pay the same.
