Question 1

Should I choose the 160 hp or 210 hp Alfa Romeo 2.2 diesel?

Accepted Answer

The 160 hp drives the rear wheels and suits motorway driving. The 210 hp adds Q4 all-wheel drive, useful in the mountains and on wet roads, at a higher price.

Question 2

Which gearbox do new Alfa Romeo diesels have?

Accepted Answer

The Giulia and Stelvio use an eight-speed automatic with a torque converter, while the Tonale diesel has a dual-clutch automatic. No new Alfa diesel has a manual.

Question 3

Is a new diesel Alfa Romeo still worth buying in Italy?

Accepted Answer

For high motorway mileage it uses less fuel than the petrol versions. In cities with traffic limits, such as Milan's Area B, check the rules for diesels before buying, as the calendars tighten over the years.

Question 4

Does a new Alfa Romeo diesel pay the superbollo?

Accepted Answer

No. The most powerful diesel, the 210 hp 2.2, has about 154 kW, below the 185 kW threshold. The Giulia and Stelvio diesels do exceed 100 kW, so part of their bollo is charged at the higher rate.
