Question 1

Which new BMWs are plug-in hybrids?

Accepted Answer

The 2 Series Active Tourer, the 3, 5 and 7 Series, the X1, X3 and X5, and at the top the M5 and XM. All are automatic and can cover short trips on electricity alone.

Question 2

Do BMW plug-in hybrids pay the bollo in Italy?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but in most regions a hybrid pays one flat rate per kW whatever its Euro class, with no higher rate above 100 kW. Several regions grant longer exemptions or reductions, so check the rules of your own region.

Question 3

Is a plug-in hybrid BMW worth it without a home charger?

Accepted Answer

Mostly not: on an empty battery it carries the weight of the electric system and uses more fuel than a plain petrol car. It pays off for drivers who charge often and keep most daily trips short.

Question 4

Should I buy a new or a used BMW plug-in hybrid?

Accepted Answer

A new one has the full factory warranty and the latest battery. A used one costs much less, but ask for a check of the battery's capacity and the charging history before buying.
