Question 1

Do new convertibles pay the superbollo in Italy?

Accepted Answer

Only those above 185 kW, about 252 hp. The Mercedes SL, Porsche 911, Maserati GranCabrio and BMW M4 are above it, while the Fiat 500, Mazda MX-5, Mini and T-Roc stay well below; on the 4 Series and CLE it depends on the version.

Question 2

Which new convertibles are electric in Italy?

Accepted Answer

The Fiat 500 and the Abarth 500 are sold as electric cabrios, with a fabric roof that folds back. Under national law they pay no bollo for five years from first registration, and Lombardy and Piedmont exempt them for good.

Question 3

Is a fabric roof or a folding hard top better on a convertible?

Accepted Answer

A fabric roof, as on the Mercedes SL and CLE, BMW 4 Series and Mini, is lighter and takes less boot space when folded. The Mazda MX-5 is also sold as the RF, with a folding hard top that keeps the cabin quieter.

Question 4

Is it better to buy a new or a used convertible in Italy?

Accepted Answer

A new convertible has the factory warranty on the roof mechanism, one of its costliest parts to repair. On a used one, run the roof through a full cycle and check the seals and drains for leaks.
