Question 1

Which new cars are still sold with a diesel engine in Italy?

Accepted Answer

Mostly larger cars: the Land Rover Defender and Range Rover, the Audi A3, A5 and A6, the Skoda Octavia, Karoq and Kodiaq, the Volkswagen Golf, Passat and Tiguan, the Mercedes E-Class and GLC and the Mazda CX-60. Van-based models such as the Renault Trafic and Kangoo and the Fiat Qubo L keep it too.

Question 2

Does a new diesel car pay more bollo in Italy?

Accepted Answer

No, the bollo is set on the car's kW and Euro class, not its fuel, so a new diesel pays the same as a petrol car of equal power. Above 185 kW the superbollo is added, and IPT at registration follows the kW and your province.

Question 3

Can a new diesel car enter low-emission zones in Italian cities?

Accepted Answer

Each city sets its own rules and tightens them by Euro class over time, Milan's Area B being the best known. A new diesel meets the latest Euro 6 standard, but check the calendar of the cities you drive in before buying.

Question 4

Is a new diesel car still worth buying in Italy?

Accepted Answer

It makes sense for high annual mileage, motorway driving and towing, where lower consumption pays back. For mostly short trips a petrol or hybrid suits better, since a diesel's particulate filter needs regular longer runs to clean itself.
