Question 1

What is the difference between a full hybrid and a plug-in hybrid?

Accepted Answer

A full hybrid, like most Toyotas and Lexuses, charges its small battery as it drives and covers only short stretches on electricity. A plug-in hybrid has a larger battery charged from the mains and can do everyday trips on electricity alone if charged regularly.

Question 2

Do new hybrid cars pay the bollo in Italy?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but the rules follow the owner's region. Most regions charge hybrids one flat rate per kW whatever the Euro class, and a few exempt new hybrids for some years, such as Veneto for three tax years and Puglia and Basilicata for about five.

Question 3

Is a plug-in hybrid worth it without a charging point?

Accepted Answer

Rarely: without regular charging it runs mostly on its petrol engine while carrying the weight of a large battery. A full hybrid, or Nissan's e-Power, needs no plug and suits a buyer who cannot charge at home or at work.

Question 4

Is it better to buy a new or a used hybrid car in Italy?

Accepted Answer

A new hybrid has the manufacturer's warranty, which on the hybrid battery usually runs longer than on the rest of the car. Any regional bollo exemption counts from first registration, so a used hybrid has already spent part of it.
