Question 1

What is a mild-hybrid petrol car?

Accepted Answer

A petrol engine helped by a 48-volt starter-generator and a small battery, which recovers energy when braking and assists when pulling away. It cannot drive on electricity alone and is never plugged in, and how the bollo treats it depends on the fuel recorded on its Documento Unico.

Question 2

Can I buy a new petrol car that also runs on LPG in Italy?

Accepted Answer

Yes, some manufacturers sell factory bi-fuel petrol and LPG versions, such as Dacia's ECO-G Sandero and Duster. In most regions a dual-fuel car pays one flat bollo rate per kW, whatever its Euro class.

Question 3

How much does it cost to register a new petrol car in Italy?

Accepted Answer

On top of the price you pay IPT, set by the car's kW and your province, plus about €127 of fees, stamp duty and plates. Up to 53 kW the IPT is a flat amount, so a small city car pays the least.

Question 4

Are new petrol cars still sold with a manual gearbox?

Accepted Answer

Yes, many smaller cars, such as the Dacia Sandero, Volkswagen Polo, Skoda Fabia and Peugeot 208, still offer a manual. Larger and more powerful models are increasingly automatic only.
