Question 1

Do new sports cars pay the superbollo in Italy?

Accepted Answer

Many do: it is due above 185 kW, about 252 hp, at €20 a year for each kW over it, in full for the first five years. The Porsche 911, BMW M2 and M4 and Mercedes-AMG GT are above the threshold, the Honda Prelude well below, so check each version's kW.

Question 2

Which new sports cars are electric in Italy?

Accepted Answer

The Audi e-tron GT and S e-tron GT are electric, and the Maserati GranTurismo also comes as the electric Folgore. Under national law an electric car pays no bollo for its first five years, and no superbollo while it is exempt.

Question 3

Can you still buy a new sports car with a manual gearbox in Italy?

Accepted Answer

Yes, a few: the BMW M2 and the Ford Mustang are offered with a manual, and so are some versions of the Porsche 911. Most others, including the Mercedes CLE, the AMG GT and the GranTurismo, are automatic only.

Question 4

Is it better to buy a new or a used sports car in Italy?

Accepted Answer

A new sports car has the factory warranty, which counts on a high-performance engine and brakes. The superbollo falls to 60% five years after construction and to 30% after ten, so an older used one is cheaper to keep.
