Question 1

Which versions of the new Volvo XC40 are on sale in Italy?

Accepted Answer

The XC40 comes as the 163 cv B3 and the 197 cv B4, both petrol engines with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and an automatic gearbox. The B3 is offered in Core, Essential, Plus and Ultra trims, the B4 in Core, Plus and Ultra, and Plus and Ultra also come as a Black Edition.

Question 2

Is the new Volvo XC40 still sold as an electric car?

Accepted Answer

Not under that name: the electric XC40 was renamed EX40 in 2024, and the XC40 range in Italy is now mild hybrid only. Used XC40s also include the earlier diesels and the T4 and T5 Recharge plug-ins.

Question 3

Does the new Volvo XC40 pay the superbollo?

Accepted Answer

No: the B3 has about 120 kW and the B4 about 145 kW, well under the 185 kW threshold. At registration you pay IPT on the car's kW and your province, and whether the bollo treats it as a hybrid depends on the fuel recorded on its Documento Unico and on your region.

Question 4

Is it better to buy a new or a used Volvo XC40?

Accepted Answer

A new XC40 brings the manufacturer's warranty and the latest infotainment, but loses the most value in its first years. A used one costs less and gives a wider choice of engines, from diesels to plug-ins and the electric version.
