Question 1

Is a manual Peugeot 208 better than an automatic?

Accepted Answer

A manual 208 is simpler and cheaper to repair, and on older cars it avoids the slow ETG5 robotised gearbox fitted to some first-generation petrols. An automatic makes more sense for drivers who spend most of their time in traffic.

Question 2

Which Peugeot 208 engines came only with a manual gearbox?

Accepted Answer

On the second generation, the non-turbo PureTech 75 and the 1.5 BlueHDi diesel were manual only. On the first, most petrols and diesels were manual, with automatics limited to a few versions.

Question 3

What should I check on a used manual Peugeot 208?

Accepted Answer

Feel for a slipping clutch or a heavy pedal, and listen for gearbox noise in the lower gears. On a turbo PureTech, also ask whether the timing belt, which runs in oil, has been checked.

Question 4

Is the new Peugeot 208 still sold with a manual gearbox?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the new 208 Turbo petrol of 100 hp keeps a manual gearbox, in Style, Allure, Edition and Lumiere trims. The hybrids and the electric E-208 are automatic only.
