Question 1

Is the Peugeot EAT8 gearbox reliable?

Accepted Answer

Generally yes: the EAT8 is an eight-speed torque-converter automatic made by Aisin, smooth and durable when its oil is changed. On a test drive, feel for harsh shifts from cold and hesitation pulling away.

Question 2

What is the Peugeot ETG gearbox?

Accepted Answer

The ETG, fitted to some 208, 2008 and 308 models, is a manual gearbox with an automated clutch rather than a true automatic. It shifts slowly, nods the car between gears and wears its clutch like a manual.

Question 3

Should I avoid a Peugeot with the AL4 automatic?

Accepted Answer

The AL4 four-speed, found on older 206, 207, 307 and 308 models, is prone to harsh shifts and limp-home faults, often from its pressure solenoids. Buy one only after a clean test drive and with records of gearbox oil changes.

Question 4

Which new Peugeots come with an automatic gearbox?

Accepted Answer

Most of them: the 110 and 145 cv Hybrid use the e-DCS6 dual-clutch, the 3008 and 5008 plug-in hybrids a 225 cv e-DCS6, the 408 plug-in an e-DCS7 and the Rifter's 130 cv diesel the EAT8. Every electric version, from the E-208 to the E-5008, is automatic too.
