Question 1

How does the Renault E-Tech hybrid gearbox work?

Accepted Answer

It has no clutch and no torque converter: dog clutches engage the gears, synchronised by a second electric motor, and the car always pulls away on electric power. It feels different from a conventional automatic, so try it on a test drive.

Question 2

What is the difference between a Renault E-Tech full hybrid and plug-in?

Accepted Answer

The full hybrid charges its small battery by itself while driving. The plug-in, offered on the Captur, Mégane and Rafale, has a larger battery charged from a socket and covers short trips on electricity alone.

Question 3

Do Renault hybrids pay less bollo in Italy?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the owner's region. Most regions charge a hybrid one flat rate per kW whatever its Euro class; Veneto exempts hybrids for three tax years, while Lazio and Tuscany give no exemption to recent ones.

Question 4

Which new Renault hybrids are on sale in Italy?

Accepted Answer

The Clio, Captur and Symbioz come as 160 hp full hybrids with a 1.8 petrol engine, and the Austral, Espace and Rafale as 200 hp full hybrids. The Rafale is also a 300 hp plug-in hybrid with four-wheel drive.
