Question 1

Which diesel engine is best in a used Renault Mégane?

Accepted Answer

The 1.5 dCi is the most common and the most frugal, from 90 to 115 hp, while the 1.6 dCi of 130 hp suits motorway driving better. On an older, high-mileage 1.5 dCi, ask how often the oil was changed, as stretched intervals wear the connecting-rod bearings.

Question 2

What is Renault 4Control steering?

Accepted Answer

It is four-wheel steering: at low speed the rear wheels turn against the front ones to tighten the turning circle, and at speed with them for stability. It was fitted to the Talisman and to the sportier Mégane GT and RS.

Question 3

Is the Renault EDC automatic gearbox reliable?

Accepted Answer

EDC is Renault's dual-clutch automatic, with six speeds and dry clutches on smaller engines and seven speeds and wet clutches on stronger ones. Juddering when pulling away usually means the clutches need attention, so test it in slow traffic.

Question 4

When did Renault stop making the Laguna and Talisman?

Accepted Answer

The third Laguna was built until 2015 and replaced by the Talisman. The Talisman was dropped in 2022 with no direct successor, so a mid-size Renault saloon is now only found used.
