Question 1

Which SEAT petrol engine should I avoid?

Accepted Answer

Be careful with the 1.2 and 1.4 TSI with a timing chain, built up to about 2012, which can suffer chain stretch; ask whether the chain was replaced. The belt-driven TSI engines that followed are much sounder.

Question 2

Is the SEAT 1.0 TSI reliable?

Accepted Answer

Generally yes: the three-cylinder 1.0 TSI has a timing belt and a good record when serviced on time. It suits the Ibiza and Arona and pulls a Leon well enough at moderate speeds.

Question 3

What is the 1.5 TSI in a SEAT?

Accepted Answer

A four-cylinder petrol engine that can shut down two cylinders at light load to save fuel, fitted to the Leon, Ateca, Arona and Ibiza. Some early cars hesitated when pulling away cold, so ask whether the engine software was updated.

Question 4

How much does a new petrol SEAT cost?

Accepted Answer

Every new Ibiza and Arona runs on petrol, with the 1.0 EcoTSI at 95 or 115 hp, the 150 hp 1.5 TSI with DSG and, on the Ibiza, the 80 hp 1.0 MPI. Each version is listed at SEAT's list price beside the used cars.
