Question 1

Can you drive into Ortigia in Syracuse?

Accepted Answer

Ortigia, the old town on its island, is a limited-traffic zone (ZTL) watched by cameras, so only authorised vehicles may enter during its hours. Check the city's current rules before driving in with a newly bought car.

Question 2

How much is the bollo on a used car in Sicily?

Accepted Answer

Sicily applies the national base rates on kW and Euro class: €2.58 per kW up to 100 kW and €3.87 above for a Euro 4 to 6 car. Dual-fuel and alternative-fuel cars pay a flat €2.58 per kW.

Question 3

Do electric cars pay the bollo in Syracuse?

Accepted Answer

Electric, plug-in hybrid and hydrogen cars newly registered in Sicily from 2026 to 2028 pay no bollo for five years. An older used electric follows the national rule: five years exempt from first registration, then a quarter of the rate.

Question 4

Should someone in Syracuse buy a used car on the mainland?

Accepted Answer

Rarely: the car must cross the Strait of Messina by ferry and then drive down the island, and a distant seller is hard to reach if a fault appears. IPT is the same either way, since it follows the buyer's province.
