Question 1

What should I check on a used manual Skoda?

Accepted Answer

Test the clutch take-up and listen at idle: diesels with a dual-mass flywheel, such as the 2.0 TDI, rattle or shudder when it wears. It is usually replaced together with the clutch, which makes for a costly job.

Question 2

Is a manual Skoda cheaper to run than a DSG?

Accepted Answer

Usually, as a worn clutch on a manual costs less to replace than a DSG's clutch pack or mechatronic unit. Fuel use is similar on recent models.

Question 3

Is a used manual Skoda Octavia 4x4 a good buy?

Accepted Answer

It is for drivers in the mountains: its Haldex coupling sends drive to the rear wheels when the fronts slip. Ask whether the Haldex oil and filter were changed at the scheduled intervals.

Question 4

Accepted Answer

Yes, on some petrol and diesel versions of the Fabia, Scala, Kamiq, Octavia and Karoq, each at Skoda's list price beside the used cars. The Kodiaq and Superb are now sold only with the DSG.
