Which engine is best on a used petrol Smart Fortwo?

On the 453, the 71 hp 1.0 suits town driving, while the 90 hp 0.9 turbo is more relaxed on fast roads. The 451's 1.0 came with 61 or 71 hp, or 84 hp as a turbo.

Does the Smart Fortwo 453 have a manual gearbox?

Yes, the 453 came with a five-speed manual or the six-speed Twinamic dual-clutch automatic. The 451 had only its automated single-clutch gearbox, so a manual Fortwo is always a 453.

Is the automated gearbox on the Smart Fortwo 451 reliable?

It is an automated manual with one clutch, so slow, nodding shifts are normal rather than a fault. On a test drive, check that it engages cleanly from cold and that no warning light comes on.

How much bollo does a petrol Smart Fortwo pay?

The bollo is charged on kW and Euro class at the owner's region's rate, and a Fortwo's low power keeps it among the lowest. A 451 is Euro 4 or Euro 5, a 453 Euro 6.
