Question 1

Is the Smart softouch gearbox reliable?

Accepted Answer

It is an automated manual: an actuator works a conventional clutch, so shifts are slow and the clutch and actuator wear. On a test drive, check that the car pulls away smoothly and changes gear without long jolts.

Question 2

What is the difference between softouch and twinamic on a Smart?

Accepted Answer

The softouch of the 1998–2014 Fortwo has a single clutch, while the twinamic, from 2014, is a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox that shifts with no break in pull. On a used car, the twinamic feels much closer to a conventional automatic.

Question 3

Is an electric Smart a good automatic for the city?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the EQ Fortwo and EQ Forfour have a single-speed transmission and are quiet in traffic, with a small battery meant for urban trips. Ask for the battery's state of health and check which on-board charger the car has.

Question 4

What versions of the new Smart #1, #3 and #5 are sold in Italy?

Accepted Answer

All three are electric SUVs with an automatic transmission. The #1 and #3 have 272 hp and rear-wheel drive, or 428 hp and four-wheel drive as the Brabus, mostly with a 66 kWh battery; the #5 has 100 kWh and 363 or 646 hp.
