Question 1

Is the Toyota Yaris Hybrid's automatic gearbox reliable?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the e-CVT has no clutch, belt or torque converter to wear: a planetary gearset blends the petrol engine with two electric motor-generators. It asks for little beyond fluid checks at servicing.

Question 2

What is the Toyota Yaris MultiMode gearbox?

Accepted Answer

MultiMode is a robotised manual with a single clutch, fitted to the second-generation Yaris. It shifts slowly and can jerk, so on a test drive check that it pulls away smoothly, as the clutch and its actuator are costly to fix.

Question 3

Why does a Toyota Yaris Hybrid rev high when accelerating?

Accepted Answer

Under hard acceleration the e-CVT holds the engine at high revs while the speed builds, which can sound like a slipping clutch. It is normal, and at a steady speed the engine quietens or switches off.

Question 4

How much does a new automatic Toyota Yaris cost?

Accepted Answer

Every new Yaris Hybrid is automatic: the 1.5 Hybrid 115 with 116 hp or the Hybrid 130, in base, Icon, Premium and GR Sport trims. Each version is at Toyota's list price beside the used cars.
