Question 1

Which Volkswagen Golf generation is best to buy used?

Accepted Answer

The seventh generation, from 2012 and updated in 2017, is a sound buy with well-proven engines. The eighth, from 2020, is more modern, but early cars had infotainment software faults that later updates fixed.

Question 2

What problems do the Golf's 1.2 and 1.4 TSI engines have?

Accepted Answer

The early chain-driven 1.2 and 1.4 TSI, fitted to the sixth generation and the last fifth-generation cars, can suffer timing-chain stretch, so ask whether the chain has been replaced. The belt-driven TSI engines of the seventh generation do not share this weakness.

Question 3

Golf GTI, GTD or R: what is the difference?

Accepted Answer

The GTI has a 2.0 TSI petrol engine and front-wheel drive, the GTD a 2.0 TDI, and the R the most powerful 2.0 TSI with 4Motion all-wheel drive. Every Golf R from the sixth generation on has more than 185 kW and pays the superbollo, which falls as the car ages.

Question 4

How much does a new Volkswagen Golf cost?

Accepted Answer

The new Golf is sold as a hatchback or Variant with the 1.5 TSI and eTSI petrol engines, hybrid versions, the 2.0 TDI and the plug-in eHybrid and GTE, from Life to R-Line Plus. Each version is shown at Volkswagen's list price beside the used Golfs.
