Is a used Volkswagen Polo diesel worth buying?

It pays off mainly for long distances, where the TDI uses little fuel on the motorway. For town driving a petrol Polo is simpler, since short trips clog the particulate filter.

Was the Volkswagen Polo TDI affected by dieselgate?

Yes, the Euro 5 EA189 1.2 and 1.6 TDI engines in fifth-generation Polos were recalled for a software update. Check with a Volkswagen dealer that it was done before you buy.

Which is better on a Polo, the 1.4 or the 1.6 TDI?

The four-cylinder 1.6 TDI is smoother and quieter, while the three-cylinder 1.4 TDI of 2014–2017 Polos is frugal but vibrates more at idle. Both suit a driver who covers many kilometres.

Can a diesel Volkswagen Polo drive into Italian low-emission zones?

It depends on its Euro class and the city: Milan's Area B and other schemes restrict older diesels, with limits that tighten over the years. Check the Euro class on the Documento Unico against the rules where you drive.
