Question 1

What should I check on a used manual Volkswagen Polo?

Accepted Answer

A Polo used mostly in town wears its clutch faster, so check that it bites smoothly and not too high. Crunching into a gear points to worn synchromesh, which is worth a garage look before buying.

Question 2

Is a manual Volkswagen Polo better than a DSG?

Accepted Answer

A manual is simpler, with no dry-clutch DSG whose mechatronic unit can fail on older cars. The DSG is easier in traffic, but the manual usually costs less to keep over the years.

Question 3

Which manual Volkswagen Polo engine uses the least fuel?

Accepted Answer

On petrol, the 1.0 TSI of 95 hp is generally more frugal on the open road than the non-turbo MPI, which needs more revs to keep up. The 1.4 and 1.6 TDI use less still, but only suit long distances.

Question 4

Can you buy a new Volkswagen Polo with a manual gearbox?

Accepted Answer

Yes: the new manual Polo comes with the 80 hp 1.0 or the 95 hp 1.0 TSI, in trims from Young and Life to Style, R-Line Plus and Edition 50. The 115 hp version is automatic only.
