Question 1

Which petrol engine is best on a used Volkswagen Polo?

Accepted Answer

The 1.0 TSI at 95 or 110–115 hp suits most drivers, with enough pull for the motorway and low consumption. The non-turbo 1.0 MPI is simpler and cheap to run but feels slow outside town.

Question 2

Does the Volkswagen Polo 1.2 TSI have timing chain problems?

Accepted Answer

The chain-driven 1.2 TSI of fifth-generation Polos before the 2014 facelift can stretch its timing chain, heard as a rattle on a cold start. The later 1.2 and 1.0 TSI use a timing belt instead.

Question 3

Is the DSG gearbox reliable on a petrol Volkswagen Polo?

Accepted Answer

The seven-speed DSG on the smaller TSI engines is a dry-clutch unit: check that it pulls away from a standstill without judder. Problems show mostly on early cars driven in heavy stop-start traffic.

Question 4

How much does a new Volkswagen Polo petrol cost?

Accepted Answer

The new Polo is petrol only, with the 80 hp 1.0 and a manual gearbox, or the 1.0 TSI at 95 hp, manual or DSG, and at 115 hp with DSG. Trims run from Young and Life to Style and R-Line, each at Volkswagen's list price beside the used cars.
