Question 1

How can I tell if a used Volkswagen TDI had the dieselgate fix?

Accepted Answer

Only EA189 engines, the Euro 5 TDIs built up to 2015, were recalled. A Volkswagen dealer can check from the chassis number whether the software update, and on the 1.6 the flow transformer, was fitted.

Question 2

Is a used Volkswagen TDI suitable for town driving?

Accepted Answer

Not on short trips alone: the particulate filter needs regular longer runs at speed to regenerate, or it clogs. If the car has only done town driving, ask whether the filter or EGR valve has been cleaned or replaced.

Question 3

Which used Volkswagen diesels can drive in Milan's Area B?

Accepted Answer

That depends on the Euro class, as Area B bars older diesels on a calendar that tightens over time. Check the class in field V.9 of the Documento Unico against the city's current rules before you buy.

Question 4

Which new diesel Volkswagens can you still buy?

Accepted Answer

The 2.0 TDI is still sold new on the Golf, Passat, Tiguan and Tayron and on the Caddy, Multivan, Caravelle and California, with a manual or DSG gearbox. Each version can be compared at Volkswagen's list price.
