Question 1

Golf Variant or Passat Variant: which used Volkswagen estate should I buy?

Accepted Answer

The Passat Variant is longer, with a bigger boot and more rear legroom, and suits families covering long motorway distances. The Golf Variant is easier to park in town and usually costs less to run.

Question 2

Which Volkswagen estates have four-wheel drive?

Accepted Answer

The Alltrack versions of the Golf Variant and Passat Variant pair 4Motion all-wheel drive with a raised ride height and protective trim. Some ordinary Passat Variants were also sold with 4Motion.

Question 3

What should I check on a used Passat Variant 2.0 TDI?

Accepted Answer

On Euro 6 cars, ask about the AdBlue system, and on cars used mostly in town, the particulate filter and EGR valve. Euro 5 cars built up to 2015 have the EA189 engine, which needed a software update under the dieselgate recall.

Question 4

How much does a new Volkswagen Passat Variant cost?

Accepted Answer

New Volkswagen estates are the Golf Variant and the Passat, now built only as an estate, with petrol, diesel and hybrid engines, plus the electric ID.7 Tourer. Each version is shown at Volkswagen's list price next to the used cars.
