Question 1

Which engine is best on a used Volvo XC40?

Accepted Answer

For long distances the 2.0 D3 and D4 diesels are the frugal choice; for mostly town driving the 1.5 three-cylinder T3 petrol suits better. The B3 and B4 mild hybrids replaced both and are the most recent, while the Recharge plug-ins only make sense if you can charge.

Question 2

Is the electric Volvo XC40 the same car as the EX40?

Accepted Answer

Yes: the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric, launched in 2020, was renamed EX40 in 2024. Like any electric car in Italy it pays no bollo for five years from first registration and a quarter of the rate after, and Lombardy and Piedmont exempt it for good.

Question 3

Is the Volvo XC40 four-wheel drive?

Accepted Answer

Only some versions: all-wheel drive came on the more powerful ones, such as the D4, the petrol T5 and the electric Twin Motor. The T3, the Recharge plug-ins and the single-motor electric drive one axle only, so check the specification before buying.

Question 4

How much does a new Volvo XC40 cost?

Accepted Answer

The new XC40 is sold as the 163 cv B3 and the 197 cv B4, both petrol mild hybrids with an automatic gearbox. Each version, from Core and Essential to Plus, Ultra and Black Edition, is listed at Volvo's official price.
